SIOUX CITY — A staple of Historic Fourth Street is closing after more than 20 years in business.
The restaurant Rebos announced Friday afternoon on Facebook that the doors to the popular establishment at 1107 Fourth St. have closed for the last time.
“This decision was not easy, but the time has come for us to turn the page and begin a new chapter. We want to take a moment to say thank you — from the bottom of our hearts — to every single person who has supported us over the years,” the Facebook post stated.
The “New Mexican” eatery, which served Southwestern, Cajun and Creole dishes, opened on April 25, 2005 under the ownership of Brian Rees in what was the former Bread Basket at 1101 Fourth St. The name “Rebos” was a nickname of Rees’ brother, according to a 2008 Journal story.
Rees’ family had a place in local restaurant history as his Grandpa Carl owned Carl’s Mouse Trap and Grandma Zena owned the Harbor Inn.
“My folks worked so I’d be with Grandma or Grandpa during the day and that, a lot of times, was down at the businesses,” he said in 2005.
In 2010, the business expanded with a location in Arnolds Park, Iowa and in 2014 the main Sioux City business moved to 1107 Fourth St.
“I had been eyeing this location for a long time,” Rees told The Journal at the time. “The dining room is bigger, the kitchen is bigger and we were just running out of space in our old location.”
