Coffee Dasara to be held in Karnataka’s Madikeri on Sept. 24

A festival to celebrate the signature crop of Kodagu will be held on September 24 in Madikeri, bringing together the myriad flavours, brews, and cultural expressions under the banner of Coffee Dasara.

To be held at the Kala Sambhrama Stage at Gandhi Maidan in Madikeri, the event will also provide a platform for coffee growers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts of the brew synonymous with the district.

H.T. Anil, convenor, Coffee Dasara, said in a release that the concept was conceived by MLA for Madikeri Mantar Gowda. Introduced last year, the festival received widespread appreciation, he added. The forthcoming event is the second edition and is being held in collaboration with the Coorg Planters’ Association, Mr. Anil stated.

Minister in charge of Kodagu district N.S. Boseraju will inaugurate the coffee stalls at the D. Sakamma Memorial Hall at 10 a.m., while Coffee Board Chairman Dinesh Devaiah will launch the stage events, which will be presided over by Mr. Gowda.

Apart from exhibition of coffee varieties, the event will feature lectures for coffee growers from 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Resource persons from the Coffee Board and other professional bodies have been roped in for the purpose. Maintaining quality, new coffee varieties, and soil fertility in coffee cultivation are some of the topics that will be deliberated upon, said Mr. Anil.

As part of the celebrations, ten achievers in coffee cultivation will be felicitated, including Siri Women’s Self-Help Group from Takeri.

Coffee Dasara will also host culinary competitions, showcasing coffee-flavoured cakes, brownies, biscuits, puddings, beverages, and chocolates.

In addition, 35 stalls will provide information on coffee and allied sectors.

Departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Industries, and Fisheries; Horticultural Producers’ Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society, Nandini Milk Products, and the Kodagu Coffee Growers’ Cooperative Society will also participate in the event which will reinforce Kodagu’s identity as the “coffee capital” of India, said Mr. Anil.
