Well-known musician in critical condition after a two-car collision on Rhymer Highway

ST. THOMAS — Javon Sasso, a well-known musician, remained in critical condition at Schneider Hospital where he was rushed Monday night after being extricated from his car following a two-car collision on Weymouth Rhymer Highway.

A minor passenger in Sasso’s vehicle had “no visible injuries,” according to the V.I. Police Department on Tuesday.

The accident occurred around 11:34 Monday and according to police, the “Traffic Investigation Bureau responded to a two-car auto accident on Rhymer Highway East bound lane just Pass KLR entrance. The operator of a white Kia Sol had to be extracted from the vehicle by Fire/EMS and Rescue.”

The operator, later identified as Sasso was taken to Schneider Hospital for treatment for a host of injuries.

“The operator sustained a fractured skull, punctured lungs, neck fracture, mid fema fracture, blunt force trauma to the chest and two broken ribs. The female minor in said vehicle sustained no visible injury; she was also seen by doctors at RLSH.”

The other car, a Toyota Rav 4, also had a passenger.

“The operator of the Toyota Rav 4 (silver) complained of pain to the stomach and back. The passenger in said vehicle, a female, complained of pain to the stomach and sustained a broken right wrist,” according to the statement.

Police said that the silver Rav 4 was traveling eastward in the left eastbound lane, just east of the New Hernhut-KLR entrance.

“The white Kia Sol was traveling westward in the left west bound lane, the operator of the white Kia Sol failed to stay left and veered right into the east bound lane, colliding with the silver Rav 4 causing same to overturn in the east bound lane. Both vehicles came to rest in the east bound lane with the Toyota Rav 4 on its left side,” according to the statement.

Police spokesman Glen Dratte, reached for an update this morning, said attempts to fly Sasso off-island for care had to be aborted due to the critical nature of his injuries.

As of Daily News press time, Sasso remained in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit. The investigation is ongoing, Dratte said.
