First Lady Melania Trump met with Princess Catherine of Wales for an event highlighting children and nature as they gathered with a group of children ‘Squirrels’ from the United Kingdom Scouts.
They arrived together at Frogmore Gardens, just before noon, speaking amiably for a few minutes before the event began.
The two dignitaries took a casual approach to the afternoon, as the first lady wore a tan suede leather jacket and white riding pants. Princess Kate wore a brown dress from Ralph Lauren and olive suede jacket along with a brown cashmere knitted vest.
The duo approached Chief Scout for the Scout Association Dwayne Fields, who also serves as a television personality for nature and exploration shows.
Fields welcomed them and brought them out to see the children.
The event fit well with the first lady’s effort to draw attention to children, as she has made the education and wellbeing of children a focal point of her time in the East Wing.
Four tables of children ages 4-6 sat with adult volunteers who monitored the activities and participated in the event.
Two groups of children were putting ink on leaves and pressing them on paper and adding illustrations of their own while the first lady sat in a chair and examined their art.
‘This is beautiful!’ she exclaimed.
One small boy showed the first lady how to do a leaf pressing and two other children joined them.
Using a brown marker, Mrs. Trump filled in an outline of a bear drawing.
‘He’s a happy bear, right?’ she asked.
The boys showed her where to put paste and where to put the leaves to finish the drawing.
The first lady also took a yellow marker and drew a sun and a green marker to draw some grass. The boy added a pink flower to the drawing using a pink marker.
Princess Kate sat on the grass and spoke with some of the children about their art.
A small girl took the First Lady’s hand and led her to another table with a hop-skip.
The girl sat on her lap as she spoke to the other children
‘Nice to meet you all. What are you doing? It’s so beautiful. It’s so nice.’ she said as she the children showed her their work.
The children were building ‘bug hotels’ out of bits of cardboard and cardboard tubes.
‘Show me how, what I should do,’ she said.
The children obliged.
‘Oh yes, fun!’ she replied.
The children showed her an outline of what they were working on and one child showed her a note on the back of the cardboard that thanked her for coming and wished her a safe trip home.
When one child asked the Mrs. Trump what her favorite bug was, she replied, ‘A ladybug.’
The Princess of Wales and Mrs. Trump gathered with the children to shake a parachute filled with balls much to the children’s delight.
At one point, the children started going underneath the parachute to push the balls out.
The children then gathered on a ring of straw bales and sat as FLOTUS and Princess Kate spoke with the Scoutmaster.
The Scoutmaster spoke to the Squirrels about the day’s activities and informed them that they had achieved something very special.
‘We all earned a badge today!’ He said.
The three of them participated in the presentation ceremony as the Squirrels were given their ‘Go Wild’ badges
The first lady and the Princess of Wales presented the badges to the children in groups of three and shook their hands.
‘Congratulations!’ FLOTUS said and applauded.
The scoutmaster also called up two children to present badges to FLOTUS and the princess.
The pair moved to a celebration picnic staff brought out cartons of food and juice for the children.
‘They’re quite taken with you, remarked a volunteer to the first lady as she handed the children some food.
Princess Catherine and Mrs. Trump spoke briefly to the children and waved goodbye.
The Scoutmaster presented the First Lady his neck scarf as a keepsake and then the princess and the first lady spoke together as they walked out of the garden.
