A Northwest D.C. restaurant is honoring heritage and celebrating Hispanic culture.
On Friday, Giovanni Orellana, Executive Chef of Selva D.C., joined Megan for a cooking lesson and to talk about how his restaurant is sharing Latin American culture.
Giovanni pulled inspiration for his menu from his El Salvadorian upbringing. He grew up on a farm cooking for his siblings with his grandmother and wants to celebrate his journey through the food he makes.
“I came here at an early age, and I was focused on the journey,” Giovanni said. “The nostalgia, friends and family have come along with me on that journey”.
Selva offers a variety of traditional Latin American dishes such as Arroz Chaufa, Pollo Loco and Empanadas with a reimagined flair.
The name Selva came from the Spanish word for jungle. The restaurant is decorated and is made to feel like you are inside of a jungle.
“It’s an experience,” Giovanni said.
