Former NFL MVP Shaun Alexander and his wife are expecting their 14th child, the retired running back revealed during a televised interview Thursday, spreading the word about their growing family of homeschooled children.
The one-time Seattle Seahawks running back was on “Up & Adams” show on Thursday when the morning show displayed a picture of the player’s expanding family.
“We’re just now starting to tell people, but No. 14 is in the belly,” a broadly smiling Alexander said. “You’re the first one I’ve told on TV. So yeah, we’re just now starting to tell everybody.”
Alexander played nine years in the NFL, eight of them for the Seattle Seahawks. The University of Alabama product rushed for a league-high 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns in his MVP 2005 season.
He and his wife Valerie run Harvest Covenant in Virginia, a coop aimed at expanding “athletic opportunities” and “individualized education” for homeschooled children, according to the organization’s website.
Alexander also serves as head coach of the coop’s football team the Lions, who play their home games at Woodgrove High School in Purcellville, Virginia, which is about 50 miles west of the nation’s capital.
The Lions play teams drawn from other private and faith-based organizations. They’re set to end the season in November playing in the Homeschool Football Classic in Panama City, Florida.
When his oldest son reached the age to play football, and couldn’t as a homeschool child, Alexander said that’s when he decided to form their own team.
“There was no way for (these sons) to play in the public schools, at least not in Virginia,” said Alexander.
“So we created a homeschool coop and we invited all the homeschool kids in the area to play football. And we started Harvest Covenant. So we got great, thriving families, individual academics, dynamic sports and dynamic faith.”
