Chennai port aiming for 9.7% growth this year, says CPA Chairperson

Chennai port is seeing a cargo handling growth of around 9.7 per cent this year , according to Sunil Paliwal, Chairperson, Chennai Port Authority.

Speaking to businesslineat the sidelines of the Blue Economy Summit Tamil Nadu, Paliwal mentioned that the growth is being driven by improved containerisation and discount metrics along with overall manufacturing growth in the state and country. There could be a few shocks but we will find compensatory measures, he added.

In FY25, the ports of Chennai and Kamarajar (formerly Ennore port) achieved a combined cargo handling growth rate of 6.7 per cent, as against the national average of 4.3 per cent.

Paliwal said that the ports have seen exceptionally high volumes in the June 2025 quarter, which could be attributed to companies trying to beat the tariff deadline. He added that even though the tariffs have been in effect for a few weeks now, there hasn’t been a significant dip.

At the event, Paliwal also announced that India’s first Multimodal Logistics Park at Mappedu near Chennai, which began construction last year, will be operational by April of 2026. Initially expected to be open a few months earlier, he said that certain hindrances with land acquisitions and allotment have delayed the opening.

The 1,500 crore project’s phase 1 value is estimated to be ₹508 crores with phase 2 and phase 3 values being in the range of ₹600 crores and ₹400 crores respectively.

Critical role

Speaking at the event, EV Velu, Minister of Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports, Government of Tamil Nadu, said that the coastal economy will play a critical role in Tamil Nadu’s $1 trillion economy goal and urged port developers to expand facilities and promote industries for economic growth.

The summit included panel discussions and insights shared on topics like port infrastructure, coastal tourism, fisheries, ship building and ship repair.

It saw participation from prominent industry experts like, DN Sengottaiyan, Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Maritime Board, Vairavan , Regional Chairman, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) and various other stakeholders.
