Dr Opoku Prempeh returns to Harvard as faculty member after historic educational reforms

Former Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has once again taken the global stage at Harvard University, this time as a faculty member for the prestigious Harvard Ministerial Leadership Program.

Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, first joined the program in 2017 as a participant, where he shared insights on Ghana’s policy priorities. In 2020, he was further recognised with the Harvard Ministerial Medal of Achievement for spearheading bold reforms in Ghana’s education sector.

This year, he returned in a new capacity — as a faculty member — where he presented Ghana’s flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) program as a case study.

His lecture highlighted how visionary leadership and a commitment to equity can transform access to education and secure the future of a nation.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr Opoku Prempeh noted that the program provided a platform to showcase Ghana’s education reforms and the impact they continue to have on millions of young people.

“Expanding access, breaking down barriers, and giving hope to a new generation of Ghanaians is a legacy of service that continues to inspire me,” he said.

The Free SHS program, introduced in 2017 under the Akufo-Addo administration, remains one of the most impactful policies in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, giving thousands of students the opportunity to access secondary education regardless of financial background.
