Police cameras, officer overtime authorized after 4 shot at restaurant near WMU

KALAMAZOO, MI — Heading into the weekend, Kalamazoo police have announced efforts to increase safety in and around a restaurant where there was a shooting last weekend.
Four people were shot and another was injured by debris inside Two Fellas Grill, 2730 W. Michigan Ave., at 3:16 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, police said previously.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is working with the business owner to better meet their safety needs, the department said.
Two Fellas agreed to allow a surveillance camera cart to be placed on the property to assist KDPS in monitoring the area.
The carts are placed in areas where KDPS wants to monitor or deter crime. The department typically places them on city-owned property, such as parks, but surveillance cameras have also popped up at Kalamazoo businesses.

“We have seen consistent success with these camera carts serving as a deterrent to violent crime,” KDPS Public Information Officer Zach Hamelton said.
In addition, he said, KDPS will be deploying up to five additional officers for overtime in this area throughout the weekend.
The business also announced it would be reducing its late-night hours, now only staying open until 3 a.m. instead of 4 a.m.
Two Fells Grill also hired armed private security in the wake of the shooting, the company said.
The injured people were treated at the hospital and released, police said.
This was an isolated incident and not reflective of typical activity at this location, Hamelton said.
“It is important to emphasize that violent crime in our city is driven by a very small percentage of individuals, and we remain committed to holding them accountable,” Hamelton said.
KDPS has arrested a man involved in the altercation, but hasn’t announced an arrest of the shooter yet.
Year to date, the department has received eight calls for service at the address, and three of those calls were directly related to the shootings on Sept. 20.
