SWIMMING: BIG SWEEP FOR CENTRAL
Bay City Central is starting to pile up the rare accomplishments.
After delivering a string of state-qualifying performances, the Wolves followed it up with a Saginaw Valley League sweep, defeating Saginaw Heritage 95-80 and Davison 96-74. It was Central’s first win over Davison in at least 10 years.
“What was expected to be a close meet with Davison ended up not being that close,” said Central coach Dave Staudacher after his team improved to 4-1.
Laney Wilson highlighted the day by taking first place in her first diving competition for Central.
Lauren Klawon, Lauren Boon, Coco Salazar and Lauren Bontekoe continued their winning ways by capturing the 200 medley relay. Boon added wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle while Salazar took the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Bontekoe was tops in the 500 freestyle and Klawon was first to the wall in the 100 backstroke.
SOCCER: PINCONNING RALLIES FOR WIN
Pinconning is suddenly rolling like rarely before.
The Spartans turned around an early deficit, charging to a 4-2 victory over Birch Run for its first come-from-behind win of the season.
Pinconning (7-8) built upon its best season since 2012 with a three-game winning streak.
Hunter Groulx, Max Wieland and Trevin Billingsley all scored in the first 20 minutes of the second half to erase a 1-0 deficit. After Birch Run diced it to 3-2, Billingsley iced the win with his second goal with just 20 seconds remaining.
GOLF: YAROS IS JPC RUNNER-UP
Pinconning didn’t field a full team for the Jack Pine Conference Jamboree it hosted at Maple Leaf but was able to make an impact.
Senior Sarah Jaros fired a nine-hole round of 44, good for runner-up honors in the field of 37 golfers.
Eleanor Boettcher carded 51 and Elley Shoultes 52 for the Spartans.
Standish-Sterling won the event with a 200 team total, led by Kennedy Kuberski at 45, Emma Proctor 48, Anna Briggs 52 and Gracie Haskins 55.
