The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced a woman to three-year rigorous imprisonment for cheating several people by running an unauthorised monthly chit fund scheme.
Based on a complaint from T. Amulraj, 63, of Nandambakkam, the Economic Offences Wing (EoW), Chennai, booked a case against Vani, 45, who had cheated six subscribers, including the complainant, of ₹15 lakh in a monthly chit fund scheme that was being run without being registered with the government. Moreover, she failed to return the money with interest as promised even after the amount matured.
The EoW arrested Vani in 2022 on charges of cheating and other offences. After completing the investigation, a final report was filed at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in 2023. At the trial’s conclusion, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate R. Girija Rani sentenced Vani to three-years rigorous imprisonment besides imposing a fine of ₹7,000 on her.
