KUCHING, Sept 25: In reciprocity for Guro City, Seoul naming a road “Kuching South-ro” in 2022, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is finalising the naming of “Jalan Guro”, a 600-meter-long street in Kuching, ensuring these roads stand as lasting symbols of mutual respect and friendship.
The announcement came during a courtesy visit by the MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng to Guro District Mayor Jang In-hong at the Guro District Office in Seoul today.
Wee expressed heartfelt appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by Jang and the people of Guro City.
“The partnership between Kuching South and Guro, which began in 2013, has grown from strength to strength through youth exchanges, cultural collaborations, and people-to-people connections,” he said in a statement today.
A key element of this collaboration is the Youth and Cultural Exchange Programme, launched in 2015, which fosters cross-cultural understanding among younger generations. The programme features cultural performances at major events such as the Kuching Festival in Malaysia and the Guro Festival in South Korea.
“These exchanges have become annual traditions that celebrate diversity and creativity while strengthening the bonds between the two cities,” he said.
The mayors also recalled the 2019 signing of the Guro–Kuching South Business Council agreement, aimed at strengthening economic cooperation.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to revitalising the council to focus on business networking, skills transfer, and knowledge sharing for the benefit of both communities.
Wee highlighted Kuching South’s growing international recognition, including its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2021, and its candidacy for the UNICEF Child Friendly Cities Initiative and the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.
“These recognitions pave the way for deeper collaboration with Guro City in culture, sustainability, health, youth development, and urban innovation,” he said.
Jang warmly welcomed the delegation, expressing his delight in hosting the Kuching South leaders during the 2025 Guro G-Festival, themed “Harmony”.
He emphasised that the visit celebrated the long-standing friendship between Guro City and Kuching South and hoped it would open new avenues for cultural and economic cooperation.
The visit concluded with both mayors confident that their partnership will continue to foster prosperity, harmony, and shared progress for the people of Guro and Kuching South in the years to come.
