5 things you must know about Apple's new super-thin iPhone Air – it won't last as long

The whispers were spot on. Indeed, Apple is rolling out a new iPhone Air and it’s unlike anything the US company has ever launched before, writes tech editor Dave Snelling. I had the good fortune to attend the US firm’s keynote in Cupertino, California, and have already got my mitts on this ultra-thin device . If you reckon this gadget is just your cup of tea, here are 5 things you need to know before you splash out. Yes! It’s absurdly thin. The Air clocks in at a mere 5.6mm in thickness. This not only makes it the slimmest iPhone Apple has ever produced but it also trumps Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge in the slimness stakes, reports the Mirror . The photos simply don’t do the design justice. Once you hold it, it feels incredibly light, astonishingly thin, and much more manageable. This device certainly packs a punch in terms of wow factor and will also take up considerably less room in those skinny jeans. I’d strongly suggest popping into your nearest Apple Store when it hits the shelves on September 19, as seeing is believing. It’s made of sturdy stuff. Despite its slimness, the iPhone Air is engineered to endure some serious rough and tumble. It’s crafted from robust Titanium and encased in Apple’s latest Ceramic Shield 2 glass. The US tech giant asserts that the iPhone Air surpasses its rigorous bend strength standards and is tougher than any previous iPhone. We’ll have to wait for the myriad YouTubers attempting to wreck this device, but it seems they might struggle to break it. There’s a Pro processor inside. The Air is set to boast a rather impressive A19 Pro chip within its sleek glass and metal casing, the same processor that fuels the high-end iPhone 17 Pro models. This powerful brain ensures that the Air can keep up with all your daily digital demands and provides solid performance for on-the-go gaming. The iPhone Air also comes equipped with Apple’s N1 silicon. This is a fresh, Apple-designed wireless networking chip that facilitates speedy Wi-Fi 7 for seamless streaming and improved Bluetooth 6 connectivity. It only has one camera. In an effort to maintain its slim profile, Apple has opted to install just one camera on the back of the device. This means there’s no ultra-wide shooter or telephoto lens for zooming capabilities. Despite this, the company assures that its 48MP Fusion camera system offers a host of photographic features, such as varying focal lengths and portrait mode. It’s also capable of recording video in razor-sharp 4K with Dolby Vision. However, this is evidently a minor compromise that iPhone enthusiasts will need to weigh up. It won’t last as long as Apple’s other iPhones. There’s no denying that a slimmer phone equates to a smaller battery. While Apple guarantees all-day battery life, it concedes that it won’t outlast the iPhone 17 Pro. The exact duration the screen stays lit remains to be seen, but if battery longevity is crucial to you, this might not be your ideal phone. To assuage concerns, Apple is introducing a portable power pack that attaches to the back of the Air for an extra boost. Lastly, let’s talk about the cost. The standard iPhone 17 is priced at £799, while the Air will lighten your wallet by £999.
