Pepsico in DR installs innovative biodigester

Pepsico announced it has made a RD$498 million investment in a biodigester to offer a sustainable way to manage waste, generate renewable energy and create organic fertilizer.

The biodigester uses microorganisms to break down organic waste and produces valuable outputs.

The plant treats plantain peels from its Frito Lay production and reports savings of 20% on its power bill.

PepsiCo’s Santo Domingo facility encompasses the Raptor plant plant and a Global Water & Energy ANAMIX™ tank installation and sophisticated electromechanical systems. The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is designed to handle organic waste, producing 5,490 Nm³ of biogas daily.

This biogas project encompasses a purification system with advanced SULFURIXâ„¢ H2S scrubber, GASODRIXâ„¢ dryer, and activated carbon filters, to produce electricity in the combined heat and power unit.

Frito-Lay Dominicana produces NatuChips, a line of plantain chips made with 100% Dominican plantains, for export to the United States and for the domestic market. They also produce other popular snacks and beverages like Pepsi under the Frito-Lay Dominicana brand for the local market.
