USA Fan's Heckle to Rory McIlroy at Ryder Cup Had All of Team Europe Laughing

The Ryder Cup 2025 tees off TODAY, the 26th of September, and has already reignited its long-running rivalry.
Steeped in history and fierce competition, the Ryder Cup remains one of sport’s most entertaining spectacles. The biennial event pits Europe’s best golfers against the top players from the United States, and over the decades, it has produced countless unforgettable moments.
What makes the Ryder Cup truly unique is its team format and the intensity of its crowds. In a sport usually defined by silence and restraint, this tournament thrives on noise and passion. Held this year at Bethpage Black on Long Island, New York, the atmosphere has already lived up to its reputation, with fans in full voice during practice rounds.
How Rory McIlroy Has Prepared For US Crowds
Rory McIlroy has prepared for the hostile environment in an unusual way. In the build-up to the event, he introduced VR headsets that simulate the heckling of US crowds.
Speaking ahead of the BMW PGA Championship, McIlroy explained: “It is just to simulate the sights and sounds and noise. That’s the stuff that we are going to have to deal with. So it’s better to try to desensitise yourself as much as possible before you get in there. You can get them to say whatever you want them to say. So you can go as close to the bone as you like.”
Fans began arriving on Tuesday afternoon to follow their favourite players in practice, bringing with them sharp banter and quick wit. Spanish star, Jon Rahm, has already been on the receiving end, with some spectators poking fun at his recent weight loss.
“Yeah, first shot in the practice rounds. I don’t know exactly what he said, but I think it was something like, ‘Hey Rahm, where’s the Ozempic?’ or ‘When’s Ozempic?’ Something ‘Ozempic.’ I just don’t know the exact word. It was funny.”
Rahm isn’t the only target of the playful ribbing. In a video circulating on social media, McIlroy is seen struggling to button his polo shirt while surrounded by teammates. One fan seized the moment, calling out: “You don’t need a button to choke, Rory!”
The quip drew laughter not only from the crowd, but also from McIlroy and his teammates, who took the dig in good humour. With the European side set to defend the Ryder Cup, the mix of fun, tension, and rivalry is only just beginning.
