Huge noughties pop star’s low-key arrival in Sydney
One of the biggest pop stars of the early noughties is making her way around Australia – without the usual celeb entourage, it seems.

Even pop divas have to carry their own luggage sometimes.
Noughties pop star Anastacia, famed for massive hits like I’m Outta Love and Left Outside Alone, was spotted touching down in Sydney during her Australian tour – and judging by these paparazzi snaps, there was no posse of hangers-on in tow to carry her luggage or shepherd her through the airport.
Anastacia, 57, flew into Sydney this week having already played the first date of her Aussie tour in Melbourne. The shows mark her first tour of Australia in a decade, and celebrate 25 years since the release of her debut album.

With her signature dark sunglasses, Anastacia looked almost identical to when she burst onto the scene 25 years ago, but appeared to go unnoticed by her fellow travellers. She cut a low-key figure at the airport, wheeling two bags through the terminal.
Anastacia experienced some of her earliest career success in Australia, with debut single I’m Outta Love rocketing to the top of the charts here at the start of 2000 and going on to become the highest-selling song of the year in this country.

Further hits followed, and she scored her second Aussie number one in 2004 with the brooding soft-rock anthem Left Outside Alone – the second-best-selling song of that year in Oz.
But throughout that early success, Anastacia was hiding a big secret: Her real age. She didn’t find fame until her early 30s, which record company bosses deemed too advanced an age for a new pop star, and demanded she tell everyone she was in her early 20s.

“Journalists would be asking me when I was born … and I would panic. But everyone [in the industry] does it. I thought that was what you were supposed to do. I thought it meant that I had made it. But I really don’t know how people can keep up with the lie,” she told the Daily Mail in 2015.
Anastacia has now released eight studio albums – the most recent of which, Our Songs, came out in 2023 – but her pop career has also been plagued by periods of serious illness that have taken her out of action for months and sometimes years at a time.
Debut single I’m Outta Love was the biggest-selling single of 2000 in this country.
Four years later, Left Outside Alone was another huge number one here.
Illnesses the star has dealt with include Crohn’s disease, a heart condition, and two bouts of breast cancer, the most recent of which in 2013 saw her undergo a double mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery.

Speaking to news.com.au in 2021, Anastacia admitted it had been hard to sustain a global music career when health issues kept forcing her to take time out.
“That’s probably been my biggest problem – when I’m really ready and raring to go, another disease comes. It’s been tough to be able to keep the motion and momentum going,” she said.
Anastacia’s Australian tour continues with shows in Sydney tonight and Saturday before finishing in Brisbane on Monday.
