Pete Davidson Shares What His Mom Said That Helped Him Get Sober

Pete Davidson is getting candid about the words his mother, Amy, told him that made him make a change in his life.
The 31-year-old comedian appeared on the “This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von” podcast on Sept. 23, where he reflected on being at his lowest point in life.
Davidson said that a year and a half ago, he realized that he needed to want to be OK for himself. As his drug use and behavior started to worsen, he said people he cared about were starting to distance themselves from him.
“It got to the point where people I f—— loved (started to leave me),” Davidson said, before touching on his relationship with his mom. “My mom’s the most supportive person in the world.”
“And it got to a point where she called me when I was in rehab and she was like, ‘My biggest fear is that I will turn on the news and I’ll see that my son has died,’” he continued.
The “Saturday Night Live” alum said she’s never been that straightforward with him. The comments were also jarring because she tends to stay positive, he added.
“That killed me,” Davidson said. “So I was like, ‘Alright, can’t die until she’s dead.’”
Expressing his love for his mother, Davidson said, “I’d have to be a heartless, f—— sociopath to not get my s— together.”
In 2023, TODAY.com confirmed that Davidson entered rehab. The reason, at the time, was unclear but it came after he crashed his car into a home in March of that year.
Davidson has been open about his mental health struggles, including borderline personality disorder, a condition that affects how people feel about themselves and others, per the Mayo Clinic.
The actor has said that he believes some of his mental health struggles stem from the death of his father, Scott Davidson, a firefighter who died on Sept. 11, 2001. At the time, he was 7 years old.
During the podcast, he also touched on going through therapy and having supportive people in his life like his mom and even “SNL” star Colin Jost.
Davidson is now expecting his first child with model girlfriend Elsie Hewitt.
He told Theo Von that he’s “thrilled” about becoming a father and is thankful to be sober for over a year.
“But there was no f—— way that (becoming a parent) was possible (before I got sober),” he said.
“I’m really grateful it happened now — and I wasn’t looking for a relationship or… obviously I wanted to, but I wasn’t looking to have a baby. And it all just kind of happened at once and it’s been awesome,” he added.
