Six things passengers in car accidents should do to claim compensation

A law firm has claimed a dramatic rise in legal searches by passengers injured in car accidents has revealed widespread confusion about compensation rights. Between 2022 and July 2025, searches for terms such as ‘car crash passenger claim’ and other related phrases have soared by 608% in the UK, according to RTA Law. The specialist road traffic accident solicitors said that it remains a common misconception that passengers can’t make a claim. But the company claimed passengers are “in a very strong position”. The firm’s Euan Baikie said: “Passengers are in a very strong position when it comes to making a claim, as they’re almost always considered the innocent party.” He said these are the key things that people should know: He added: “The only situations where compensation might be reduced are if you weren’t wearing a seatbelt or knowingly got into a car with a driver who was unfit to drive, for example under the influence of alcohol or drugs.” He says that taking the following six steps immediately after a collision can also make all the difference: “Ultimately, passengers should feel confident in seeking the support they’re entitled to,” he said. “It’s clear more people are recognising their rights and taking steps to protect themselves after an accident.” Get daily breaking news updates on your phone by joining our WhatsApp community here .
