As the mystery of the United Nations escalator continues, Stephen Colbert mocked President Donald Trump’s reaction with a hilarious four-word nickname that left me speechless.
On a Sept. 24 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he addressed Trump’s recent visit to the United Nations, which was quite the disaster (if you’re unnecessarily dramatic).
Was it international conflicts or climate change that really drove the president of the United States over the edge? Nope. He had to walk up an escalator, and the teleprompter was glitchy, which was the last straw.
After celebrating Jimmy Kimmel’s return, Stephen said, “It has become increasingly clear that the president is a thin-skinned little devil baby who cannot stand to be giggled at,” Stephen said.

“And with that sensitivity in mind, I would like to replay this clip from yesterday,” Stephen said. “Boop!”
“Rejected!”
“Ooh, that’s tough,” Stephen continued. “Not to brag, sir. But the Late Show’s escalator is doing just fine.”
On Tuesday, when the escalator mysteriously halted before the president and first lady, Melania Trump, could ride it to the top, it didn’t appear to be a big deal. At the time, Trump jokingly mentioned it during his address to the 193-member UN assembly, “These are the two things I got from the United Nations – a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter.”
However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt escalated the situation by posting on X, “If someone at the U.N. intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately.”
And then on Sept. 24, Trump shared an unecessarily lengthy Truth Social post, claiming, “A REAL DISGRACE took place at the United Nations yesterday — Not one, not two, but three very sinister events!” Trump suggested that he and the first lady could’ve fallen on the “sharp edges” of the steps, and the escalator stopping was “absolutely sabotage.” He then called for the people responsible to be arrested.
Doubling down on the joke, Stephen introduced the “Escalator Investigator” during the monologue, which hilariously detailed more information surrounding the mysterious escalator stop.
Per HuffPost, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric claimed a readout of the escalator’s processing unit indicated “a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered at the top of the escalator,” potentially by Trump’s videographer.
In response to the Late Show segment on YouTube, people were ruthless, not holding back how they really felt about this particular scenario, being one of the primary focal points of the Trump administration for such an important event.
One user said, “The person who turned off the escalator deserves a Nobel Peace Prize…,” and another person wrote, “Calling a broken escalator sabotage is some North Korean shit.”
“Too me the funniest part of the escalator stopping was the way both tRump and Melania instantly looked at the cameras…,” another user wrote.
Someone else wrote, “Escalators freeze. Prompters glitch. Horses poop. Karma.”
“You know Trump watches this, and you know it pisses him off. That delights me,” another joked, before someone else wrote, “Just think: if an escalator simply hadn’t worked 9years ago, all of this crap could have been avoided.”
And finally, someone said, “Its a shame that the entry door to the UN couldnt have suddenly locked when he tried to go inside. We could have been spared the most shameful and embaressing ‘speech’ a US president ever rambled before world leaders.”
