YouTube TV reportedly gearing up for NBC battle

According to a new report, YouTube TV is on a “collision course” with NBC that could lead to a channel blackout, and they’re not the only ones.
CNBC reports that YouTube TV “may be on a collision course with NBCUniversal that could end in NBCU’s networks going dark on the platform.”
NBC’s contract with YouTube TV is reportedly set to end later this month and, as is almost tradition at this point, that means we’re probably going to hear about how negotations are struggling and how NBC channels may go dark on YouTube TV unless something can be resolved. Or, at least that’s what happened with Fox recently.
This latest report sheds light on where negotiations might struggle, though. YouTube TV, being a major player at this point, wants lower rates for NBC’s channels as YouTube TV execs apparently aren’t very happy with NBC’s Peacock effectively undercutting the value of NBC’s bundle for cable.

Disney is reportedly also nearing the end of its YouTube TV contract in October, which could mean similar discussions could happen on that end.
In the meantime, though, NBC executives apparently look at YouTube TV with a dose of skepticism, with one “person familiar with the negotiations” saying half-jokingly that YouTube “needs to make an example out of someone” to prove that it will fight for these lower rates. How hard YouTube will fight remains to be seen, but the roller coaster ride of losing or not losing channels every few months has certainly resulted in plenty of vocal frustration from subscribers.
