More than two decades after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai became a blockbuster, Kajol has given fans a reason to look at it differently. The actor, who played Anjali in Karan Johar’s 1998 debut, admitted she would tweak one crucial part of the love story if she were the director.
Kajol on Rahul’s love story in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Speaking to journalist Shubhankar Mishra, Kajol said audiences today often view Shah Rukh Khan’s Rahul as problematic. “For that time, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was perfect. Today, they say he was a red flag man. If I had to make that film today, I would have made that film with him not loving the woman in the saree, and loving her only once she wore workout clothes and started playing basketball with him,” she shared.
Kajol added that despite this, the film remains close to her heart: “Maybe that would be the change in the entire script. But I think there were too many nice scenes in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. There were lovely scenes.”
Kajol on her friendship with Karan Johar
The actor also spoke about her past fallout with filmmaker Karan Johar, which made headlines when Ae Dil Hai Mushkil clashed with Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay. The two did not speak for a while, with Karan even writing about the fight in his memoir. Looking back, Kajol said fights are part of friendship. “I think you shouldn’t avoid it. I think friends fight. We have come out of it and we are better than fine. So I think things that are broken, and kind of get fixed, are stronger than before and look better as well.”
Since then, she has appeared on multiple seasons of Koffee with Karan, showing their bond has only grown stronger.
The film’s lasting charm
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai tells the story of Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), Anjali (Kajol) and Tina (Rani Mukerji). Rahul and Anjali are best friends in college, but things change when Tina arrives and Rahul falls in love with her. Anjali, secretly in love with Rahul, walks away heartbroken. Years later, after Tina’s death, her daughter finds letters revealing Anjali’s true feelings. The little girl then tries to reunite her father and his old friend. In the end, Rahul and Anjali find their way back to each other.
