EU Delegation engages Namibian Parliament on partnership and development priorities

A HIGH-LEVEL European Union (EU) delegation met with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, and chairpersons of key parliamentary standing committees on Wednesday to discuss strengthening cooperation under the Namibia–EU partnership.

The delegation, headed by Mr. Barry Andrews and comprising senior European Parliament members, including Mrs. Hilde Vautmans, Chairperson of the Delegation to the Africa–EU Parliamentary Assembly, exchanged views with Namibian counterparts on a wide range of issues.

Discussions focused on Namibia’s economic and social development, civil rights, and governance, with emphasis on beneficiation of critical minerals, trade facilitation, youth unemployment, rural–urban migration, combating corruption, and enhancing ICT and cybersecurity frameworks.

Other areas highlighted included energy security, economic diversification, climate change mitigation, gender equality, and expanding cooperation with civil society and the private sector. Both parties stressed the importance of constructive engagement in addressing global and regional challenges.

Dr. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila welcomed the EU’s continued support, underscoring the value of technical and professional assistance to parliamentary committees to strengthen oversight and public service delivery.

The delegation will also undertake field visits to EU-funded projects implemented under the Global Gateway Strategy to assess their impact on Namibia’s sustainable development.
