Sensex, Nifty trade near day’s low after strong start, US Fed rate cut lifts IT stocks – Infosys, Wipro lead gainers

The domestic markets traded with marginal gains after a strong opening, boosted by the US Fed rate cut by 25 bps, which stirred optimism among investors amid India-US trade talks.
Market analysts noted that the Fed’s rate cut is giving short-term support. IT sector was the major driver today, posting some of the strongest gains, owing to its exposure to the US market.
After a strong start, benchmark indices traded near day’s low in the mid-trading session. Sensex traded with 158.66 pts or 0.19 per cent gains at 82,852.37 at 1 pm, and Nifty 50 was up by 38.95 pts or 0.15 per cent to 25,369.20.
Earlier in the session, the Sensex had touched the 83,100 mark, and the Nifty 50 briefly traded above 25,400.
The midcap index lagged, slipping 0.16 percent at the time of writing, whereas the smallcap index managed to post modest gains of 0.06 percent.
On the sectoral front, Nifty IT and pharma indices were up 0.76 per cent and 0.63 per cent, respectively. Telecom, healthcare, banking and financials also traded with marginal gains. On the other hand, oil & gas, auto, metal and realty stocks dipped. Some profit booking was witnessed in the PSU bank sector.
Top gainers & losers intraday
Among the Nifty 50 constituents, HDFC Life, Eternal, Infosys, Sun Pharma and Wipro led the gainers, while Coal India, Tata Motors, Bajaj Finance, ONGC, Trent and Bharat Electronics dragged the most.
LTIMindtree, Infosys and Coforge led the gainers of Nifty IT index.
About 2,996 stocks were traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing, out of which 1,387 stocks advanced, 1,509 declined and 100 remained unchanged. Around 60 stocks, including Hyundai, Maruti and Delhivery, touched their 52-week high, whereas 12 slipped to a 52-week low. Meanwhile, 71 stocks, featuring Zen Tech, izmo and STL Networks, hit the upper circuit and 33 were locked in the lower circuit.
Midcap & smallcap top movers today
Midcap stocks such as LIC Housing Finance, Escorts, Aditya Birla Capital, M&M Finance and Biocon soared 2-3 per cent, while Page Industries, Ola Electric, Premier Energies and Waaree Energies depreciated 2-3 per cent.
Under the smallcap segment, Newgen, Zen Tech, HFCL, Natco Pharma and Swan Corp soared 3-6 per cent. Reliance Power, Navin Fluorine, Neuland Lab, Godfrey Phillips and Affle declined 2-3 per cent.
On the BSE, Prism Johnson, Poonawalla, Heritage Foods, Banco India and Tata Investment rallied 7-14 per cent. Cohance Lifesciences, Gabriel, DCM Shriram, Sardaen and Shaily Engineering fell 4-6 per cent.
