The phone is apparently in its “final stages”

Those of you who are tired of having a foldable phone with two screens are in luck, because Samsung has just reconfirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Tri-Fold will launch at some point later this year. That news comes straight from Samsung mobile chief TM Roh, when speaking to The Chosun Daily.

Roh says that development on the phone is in its “final stages” and we should see it launch “by the end of the year.” Roh previously set an end-of-year deadline back in July, but it’s been radio silence from Samsung ever since. So it’s good to know that things are progressing well.
While Roh didn’t go into further specifics about when the phone might launch, rumors indicate that Samsung may be planning a special Unpacked event on September 29 to reveal the tri-fold to the world. The same rumor suggests that Samsung could also divulge more information about the Project Moohan headset and the rumored AI Galaxy Glasses at the same event.

However, Roh told Chosen Daily that XR devices and smart glasses will only launch “once their maturity reaches a high level.” Which is rather vague and non-committal, and disappointing since we’d previously been under the assumption that the Moohan headset would be released this year too.

What we know about the Galaxy Tri-Fold

There is still a lot we don’t know about the Samsung Galaxy Tri-Fold, including its official name. Some reports claim that it will be the Galaxy G Fold, but more recently, Samsung filed for patent protection on the name “Galaxy Z TriFold.” So either option is possible.
What we do know is that the phone will feature two hinges instead of one, allowing for three displays that unfold into one larger screen. Rumors suggest the cover screen will measure 6.49 inches, while the interior folding screen could be as large as 10 inches. That would mean the phone has more screen space than some tablets, which could prove hugely beneficial for work and productivity.
It’s also reported that Samsung is optimizing One UI 8 so that it’s able to handle working across three displays, while it’s speculated that the phone will run on a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Though neither of these things should really be that surprising to anyone.

The fact that we don’t know much else, especially if the phone is in its “final stages” of development, just shows how well Samsung has the production of the Tr-Fold locked down. Which means we may get to the September 29 launch event and be genuinely surprised about what’s revealed.
Of course, we’ll only find out for sure on the day itself, assuming that the rumored Unpacked event actually happens.
