The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for Week 4 by flying to Florida on Friday, a day earlier than they normally travel for road games, before they play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
The Eagles will have a workout on Saturday. The idea for traveling on Friday is so that the Northeastern-based franchise can get used to the temperatures in West Central Florida. Per The Weather Channel, the high on Sunday is expected to be a balmy 91 degrees with a humidity level of 70%.
During an appearance on the “NFL On Fox Presents: Review” podcast this week, Mayfield thought the Eagles were participating in a fool’s errand by leaving a day early to acclimate to the weather. He suggested the plan could backfire because players would think about the heat more during the game since the Eagles emphasized the issue during prep.
“Advantage for us, we’re in Tampa, the heat, ” Mayfield said. “They’re not used to that. I know there’s already been the stories that broke about them coming down to Tampa a day early. I don’t necessarily think that helps them.”One day doesn’t get you acclimated to this humidity. I think, honestly, it makes them think about it more when they get down here earlier.”
Mayfield is correct that the Buccaneers will still have an advantage of being more used to the heat than the Eagles, even if they leave Philadelphia a day early.
However, the extra time will make the temperature less of a shock for Sunday’s game, and it might motivate players to drink more fluids before the contest so they’re not cramping on the field.
