Vayosevana awards announced

Actor Sheela and singer P.K. Medini have been selected for the Vayosevana awards in the lifetime contribution category.

Minister for Social Justice R. Bindu who announced the Vayosevana awards here on Thursday said the lifetime contribution awards comprised a purse of ₹1 lakh each, citation, and memento.

Amaravila Ramakrishnan, member of the Kerala State Elderly Commission, has been selected for a special honour for his efforts in ensuring elderly welfare, the Minister said.

The Vayosevana are given in 11 categories. The ₹1 lakh award for the best city Corporation goes to Kochi, which has been adjudged the best elderly friendly city in south Asia by the WHO.

The award for the best district panchayat goes to Kasaragod for ensuring elderly friendly facilities in public institutions and government offices.

The award for best municipality goes to Nedumangad for excellence in doorstep services and making use of the Kudumbashree mechanism.

Mananthavady was the pick for the best block panchayat and Olavanna the best grama panchayat.

The award for the best non-governmental organisations goes to Khidma Thanal Snehaveedu.

The award for the best maintenance tribunal goes to the Thrissur maintenance tribunal. The award carries a purse of ₹50,000.

The Kunduparambu Sayamprabha Home bagged the award for the best government old-age home/Sayamprabha Home.

Kathaprasangam artiste Thrikkulam Krishnankutty and Poothamkali artiste Ambalapadikkal Narayanan have been selected for the award in the art-literature-culture sector.

Iravi Gopalakrishnan and V. Vasu have been selected for the award in the sports category.

The Vayosevana awards, instituted by the Social Justice department, are given to senior citizens, government and non-governmental institutions, and those who have demonstrated excellence in art, sports, and cultural sectors for their services in the area of elderly welfare.
