Sony Achiba’s musical career and hiatus

Sony Achiba, born to Ghanaian parents in Kumasi, began his career in the entertainment scene as a dancer after he had an accident on his left leg while playing football.

He performed with legendary highlife musicians, including Tommy Wiredu, Frank Mensah Pozo, Rex Omar, George Jahraa, Nana Tuffour and many others before transitioning into music.

The musician achieved mainstream recognition in the early 2000s with the release of critically acclaimed songs such as Sony Maba, Nipa Boniayefo (Onipa Boniayefuor) and Gyamera Woyare.

Sony Achiba’s distinctive funky Hiplife-Indian fusion songs, unique Indian-inspired apparel and dance moves established him as a top artist in the Ghanaian music industry.

Following his successes with three albums in the music scene, the musician went on a hiatus and departed Ghana for the UK to further his education.

In 2022, Sony Achiba graduated from Buckinghamshire New University in the UK with second-class upper honours in Business Management. The singer had previously earned his diploma many years ago.

He later transitioned into music production and started his own record label. In past interviews, he opened up about his struggles to survive in the UK after leaving Ghana.

Sony Achiba stated that he encountered unexpected obstacles in the job market due to a lack of experience after relocating to the UK.

He also accused veteran Ghanaian broadcaster Fiifi Banson of ending his musical career over some alleged unsavoury remarks he made about one of his songs. The renowned media personality subsequently apologised to him.
