Jim Gavin backed by legendary ex-Dublin stars as Presidential campaign ramps up

Jim Gavin has received backing from Dublin football legends Paddy Andrews and Bernard Brogan as his presidential campaign heats up. The former Dublin players, who won five All-Ireland’s on the spin under Jim Gavin, were spotted hanging up campaign posters for the Fianna Fáil candidate. Gavin, who is the head honcho of the vaunted Football Rules Committee (FRC), was announced by Taoiseach Micheál Martin as the Fianna Fáil candidate earlier this month , and his name will be on the ballot paper come October 24th. The 54-year-old will contest the election against Heather Humphries (Fine Gael) and Catherine Connolly (Independent). Gavin’s campaign got off to a ropey start last week with some social media users poking fun at one of his promotional videos that showed the ex-Dublin manager on a farm . Some users questioned the sincerity of Gavin’s ‘farm image,’ which led to the legendary football manager explaining how farming is in his blood. Earlier this week, Gavin took aim at “online hate and disinformation” that his campaign has been the target of: “I refuse to accept that the price of participating in public life should involve putting your family and friends through waves of online abuse and malicious smears. “This is not the cost of service – it is a failure of our digital culture,” he said in a statement.
