Portland, Oregon, Named No. 1 Coffee City By New Report

If you can’t start your day without a steaming cuppa joe, you’re not alone. In fact, two thirds of us drink coffee daily, according to a survey by the National Coffee Association. Thanks to national chains like Starbucks, and later, La Colombe and Blue Bottle and small, local coffeehouses, Italian barista coffee culture has been on the rise in the U.S. for decades.
You’d probably assume the Pike Place brand and its Seattle homebase would be the number one coffee city topping lists, but you’d be mistaken. Personal finance app and website WalletHub recently took a look into which American cities around were offering the best coffee culture and named Portland, Oregon, best coffee city in the U.S.

Portland, Oregon, Named Best Coffee City in America
WalletHub compared the 100 largest cities across 12 indicators, including number of coffee shops, coffee houses, cafés per capita, as well as the average price per pack of coffee, average spending her household and share of households that own coffee makers among other factors. The survey put double weight on average number of affordable and regular coffee shops per capita.
The resulting data showed Portland came out on top, due in large part to its high number of affordable coffee shops rated at least 4.5 out of 5 stars. “It also has the eighth-most coffee shops per capita that offer free Wi-Fi, which is great for anyone who wants to work while enjoying a cup of java,” said the report.
Portland is on the higher end when it comes to people owning their own coffee grinders. Nearly 24% of the population own one, the 11th-highest percentage in the nation, and around 27% of residents own a single-cup or pod-brewing coffee maker. The Pacific Northwest hub household spends an average of $192 on coffee a year, the 20th highest in the nation.
The city isn’t at a loss for its own popular coffee brands—Stumptown, a popular coffee house and beans brand founded in 1999, is based in Portland and got its start on Southeast Division Street. Heart, Never Coffee Lab and Upper Left Roasters are some popular locally loved roasters.
