Nepotism?

The local Spokesman for the PP in Benalúa, Arturo Vergara, asks why the Town Hall has spent over 100,000 euros in a hardware store belonging to the brother-in-law of the Mayor.

According to Spokesman Vergara, Mayor Manuel Martínez (who is also a councillor on the Provincial Board) has overseen the expenditure of 121,638.44 euros over a three year period in a business belonging to a close relative.

A report issued by the Municipal Secretary (a position whose main function is like that of a Notary Public for municipal transactions) the total figure of the bills was 56,002 euros in 2022, 53,501 euros in 2023 and 12,134 euros in 2024. There are still no figures for this year.

According to the PP Spokesman, “This is an affair which at the very least is striking; thus requiring an immediate response, showing the maximum transparency on the part of the Town Hall. He also claims that some of the bills had not gone through the official process in municipal accounting.

Editorial note: there does only appear to be one ferretería in the whole town according to Google Maps.
