CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Historic Charleston Foundation is helping homeowners find underused opportunities to help cover the costs of frequent upkeep.
To do that, they launched a free education easement series that connects people with financial resources they might not know about.
Most preservation-focused repairs in Charleston qualify for rehabilitation tax credits, according to the foundation, yet many homeowners are still paying full price out of their pockets.
Leaders say this is a severely underused resource.
The foundation says there are over 400 qualified properties in Charleston alone, yet only seven in the entire state took advantage of approved tax credit projects.
Roofs, shutters, porches, exterior walls, doors and other minor or even major repairs meet the criteria for funding.
Homeowners could reportedly get back 20-25% of these costs with the program.
The foundation plans to continue this series in the upcoming months and cover other topics like property insurance to maintain the birthplace of preservation.
