PHILADELPHIA — Edmundo Sosa made history Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Kyle Schwarber continued to stalk history.
Now, the only question is how many historic nights the Phillies will have the rest of this season and the postseason.
The Phillies hit a single-game record eight home runs and mashed the Miami Marlins 11-1 before 36,816 fans at Citizens Bank Park. With the win, Philadelphia clinched a bye to the National League Division Series.
Sosa hit three of the eight home runs. He is the first Phillies shortstop to hit three home runs in a game, and he did it on his first day back from the injured list after missing 12 days because of a strained groin.
“I’m a firm believer that if you work hard,” Sosa said. “If you do things the right way, if your heart’s in a great place, and if you play with 100 percent of your effort, great things are bound to happen to you. It was my turn today to be a part of history, to be a part of this great feat.”
As for Schwarber, he hit two home runs and now has 56 this season, three away breaking the club record of 58 set by Ryan Howard in 2006.
Schwarber did make some history Wednesday.
He hit his 23rd home run off a lefty this season, the most by any left-handed hitter off a left-handed pitcher in a season in baseball history.
It’s now hard to imagine that the Chicago Cubs non-tendered Schwarber after the 2020 season, making him a free agent.
His home runs Wednesday traveled 468 and 408 feet. Schwarber credited Phillies hitting coach Kevin Long when asked about his success. The two first met in 2021 when both were with the Washington Nationals.
“It just kind of takes you back to 2020,” Schwarber said. “You get non-tendered, and then you sign a one-year deal and you get with a really good hitting coach and you come up with a plan and attack it. And it just felt like it’s kind of grown over the years. Hopefully, it keeps going.”
Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm and Otto Kemp also hit home runs in the route.
Nights like Wednesday are fun, but Schwarber and the Phillies don’t have time to savor the moment. There’s still so much more to do.
“There’s a lot to be proud of, and we’re not done yet,” Schwarber said. “We’ve got to push, keep pushing. You don’t just want to be remembered for regular seasons. You want to be remembered for special things down the road.”
