Two Syracuse University students charged with hate crimes: Two Syracuse University students were arrested Wednesday after police say one of the students tossed a bag of pork into a fraternity on Rosh Hashanah. The court papers filed by Syracuse police said the crimes were a “religiously motivated attack” on Zeta Beta Tau, a historically Jewish fraternity. “This incident is not a foolish college prank and will not be treated as such,” Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said.
2nd jury deadlocks on woman’s fate in immigration trial: A second jury was unable to decide this week whether Doris Aleman-Bonilla should be convicted of an immigration-related felony brought by the U.S. government in a Syracuse court. Border Patrol agents arrested Aleman-Bonilla, of Honduras, in April after an Oswego County sheriff’s deputy pulled over her car near Fulton. On both trials, the judge blocked attempts by Aleman-Bonilla’s lawyers to allow her to tell the full story of her journey from Honduras to Mexico and eventually to Fulton.
NY lawmakers want to ban anonymous reports of child abuse. Will Hochul sign their bill? New York is poised to become only the third state in the nation to pass a law rejecting anonymous reports of child abuse in a move to cut false tips. Under the new law, callers to the state hotline would be required to provide their name and contact information, which would remain confidential and could only be disclosed in rare cases if ordered by a judge. The change won broad bipartisan support from state lawmakers in June. But now the bill has run into a potential roadblock on its way to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk to be signed into law.

What to expect from Syracuse football with Rickie Collins at QB: Don’t expect Syracuse football to stray too much from its pass-happy ways with Rickie Collins behind the wheel. Former quarterback Kyle McCord led the country in passing yards last season. Steve Angeli was leading the country in passing yards before he went down with a torn Achilles on Saturday. Just like his predecessors, Collins was brought to Syracuse to throw the ball in a freewheeling offense.
