An independent accreditation system will be established for fertility providers in a bid to improve transparency and standards across the sector.
Federal Health Minister Mark Butler announced on Friday that he had accepted all recommendations of a rapid review into the IVF sector at a meeting in Perth with his state and territory counterparts.
He said the changes would ensure there was more independence and transparency.
“There is no greater investment of hope and confidence that I can imagine people making into a sector than the investment of hope to help build a family,” he said.
The review was announced in June after two separate embryo mix-ups by Melbourne-based provider Monash IVF were revealed in a matter of months.
“I know as a father of a beautiful IVF baby myself that the damage to confidence in this sector over the last several months demanded health ministers take action,” Mr Butler said.
Victoria led the three-month review into the sector, which is currently accredited by the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee.
