A teacher at a private Christian school has admitted to sexually abusing a female student , whom he had told would make an “ideal wife as decreed by God”. Mark Baker, 53, targeted the victim while teaching at the River School in Worcester, which charges annual fees of £10,680. Baker pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. The court was informed that the offences were historic and the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is now an adult. Prosecutor Megan Jewkes detailed how Baker had inappropriately touched and kissed the girl, describing it as “a clear breach of trust”. She stated: “She was a student at River School, Mr Baker being a teacher. Mr Baker has groomed her. He’s entered into a relationship with her. “He told her she had the attributes of what a wife should be as God decreed it. This was a case of grooming. He has worked to get the young child to believe that she was to be his wife.” The court heard that Baker committed the abuse while employed at the independent Christian school. The River School, established in 1985, is overseen by the Worcester Christian Education Trust and educates 113 boys and girls aged between 4 and 16. It last underwent an Ofsted inspection in 2007, receiving a rating of Good. The school’s website asserts: “Our Christian vision and values are at the core of everything we do. We include and value every individual as significantly made in the image of their Creator.” The school’s ethos and values are clearly stated: “Relationships are the most precious things in life: our relationships with God and with one another.” Baker, donned in a dark suit, only spoke to confirm his personal details and enter pleas. He admitted guilt to two counts of indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 16. Jonathan Wiltshire, the chairman of the bench, decided to escalate the case to Worcester Crown Court due to its superior sentencing powers. He informed Baker: “We feel there’s a realistic prospect that a greater sentence will be handed out by crown court so you will be sentenced by a judge instead.” Baker, hailing from Haws Hill, Carnforth, Lancs. , was granted unconditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Worcester Crown Court on October 21 for sentencing. The school has been approached for comment.
