The Labour Party government could dramatically swoop in over the Jaguar Land Rover cyber attack, it has emerged. The government, led by Sir Keir Starmer, is reportedly loooking at buying up Jaguar Land Rover parts to protect jobs at suppliers. Plans are reportedly being made to mitigate the effect of a production freeze caused by a severe cyber attack at the Birmingham and Coventry car maker. Labour could start buying parts from Jaguar Land Rover’s suppliers in a plan to protect manufacturing jobs from the impact of the outage. Peter Kyle, the Business Secretary, is considering a plan that would lead to the government buying parts made by the suppliers, then selling them back to JLR when it resumes production of its vehicles. The scale of any government purchase could be “very significant”, ITV News said. Kyle said on Tuesday: “Getting JLR back online as soon as possible is my top priority, providing much-needed certainty to workers and suppliers.” It comes days after it emerged unions have demanded a furlough scheme for workers who are suffering because of the shutdown. Industry minister Chris McDonald said: “We have two priorities, helping Jaguar Land Rover get back up and running as soon as possible and the long-term health of the supply chain. “The Business Secretary and I are visiting JLR today to host companies in the supply chain, to listen to workers and hear how we can support them and help get production back online. “We are acutely aware of the difficulties the stoppage is causing for those suppliers and their staff, many of whom are already taking a financial hit through no fault of their own – and we will do everything we can to reassure them that the Government is on their side.”
