Who Is Paul Toboni? Ex-Red Sox Scouting Director Linked to Nationals President of Baseball Operations Role

The Washington Nationals are making a long-time coming front office move. And it involves poaching a rising star from one of baseball’s most storied franchises. Paul Tobani, a 35-year-old executive who has been slowly climbing the Boston Red Sox ranks, is set to become the New York Nationals’ new head of baseball operations.

Jeff Passan reported it first, “BREAKING: The Washington Nationals are finalizing a deal to name Paul Toboni their new head of baseball operations, sources tell ESPN. Toboni, 35, rose rapidly to become assistant GM for the Boston Red Sox and is widely regarded as one of the best young executives in MLB.” And it was later confirmed by The Athletic, too.

Tobani will be getting a club that needs a lot of new direction. The Nationals fired Mike Rizzo and even Dave Martinez back in July. That left Mike DeBartolo as the interim lead, but now that they have locked Tobani, he is one of the most intriguing names that can bring a change to the team. Learn more about his life, his education, his achievements, and more.

Paul Toboni’s Early Life, Education, and Athletic Roots

Tobani grew up in California before he headed east for school. He graduated from the University of California, where he earned a B.A. in political economics and was also part of the NCAA Baseball College World Series (2011). He then went on to do his MBA at the University of Notre Dame. That combination of love of baseball and strong academic background gave him a strong foundation to thrive in the competitive sports world and handle baseball operations.

Breaking Into MLB: Toboni’s Early Career and Red Sox Rise

Paul Tobani broke into professional baseball back in 2013 as the baseball operations intern with the Oakland Athletics. Then, two years later, he ended up doing a similar internship with the Boston Red Sox. And that led to what you can say was a meteoric rise in the organization. By 2015, he was hired as an area scout, and just a year later, he became the assistant director of amateur scouting. Then, in 2019, he became the director of amateur scouting. Finally, in September 2022, he got into the shoes of a vice president of amateur scouting and player development. These were bigger shoes to fill, as this position placed him at the center of Boston’s player pipeline.

Then, when Craig Breslow was hired to lead Boston’s baseball operations in 2023, Tobani was promoted. He was then senior vice president and assistant general manager. That move just signals how highly Tobani was viewed in Boston. Even more amazing, considering he had already survived the regime changes by Ben Cherington, Dave Dombrowski, and Chaim Bloom. News also came about how Tobani was in the running for the GM title under Breslow. But instead of waiting around for the opportunity, he chose to jump to Washington.

The Washington Nationals Hire: What It Means for Toboni and the Team

For the Washington Nationals fans, the hire of Tobani means both a fresh start and a gamble. Tobani will be replacing Mike Rizzo in the organization. He spent more than a decade there and took the club to five playoff appearances and even a World Series championship in 2019. So he has big shoes to fill. But since then, the team has collapsed, posting a 326-480 record since 2021, including a 64-94 mark this season.

Plus, Washington’s drafting and player development track record under Mike Rizzo was not great at most. Since 2013, the Nationals have drafted and developed just two players who have reached a career 5.0 bWAR. And that’s Nick Pivetta and Jesus Luzardo. And here is the kicker—both were traded away before they even reached the majors. The lack of development is one of the key reasons the Nationals’ farm system has remained middle of the pack. And this is where Tobani comes in.

Paul Toboni’s Legacy with the Red Sox and Future Outlook with the Nationals

Tobani’s fingerprints are all over the Boston Red Sox’s improved farm system, and it has produced several young stars like Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, Payton Tolle, and Connelly Early. Plus, Tobani also watched over trades that netted players like Chase Meidroth, Kyle Teel, and Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz. Those moves show that he had a knack for scouting and also understanding player value.

And Jeff Passan rightly pointed out, those development wins are exactly what the Washington Nationals require right now. But Tobani won’t have a simple job in Washington. The Nationals play in a tough division where the Mets and the Phillies throw in their muscle aplenty. The Braves also boast one of baseball’s strongest cores. And the Marlins are building something promising, too.

Right now, the Nationals roster does have some exciting young pieces. James Wood and CJ Abrams are headlining this. Dylan Crews, the No. 2 overall pick in 2023, has also become one of the most talked-about plausible “cornerstone players.” Left-hander MacKenzie Gore is also one name making the noise. The outfield of the future could be Crews, Daylen Lile, and Robert Hassell III. But even then, compare that to the depth that Tobani helped build in Washington; it does feel less. But compared to the depth Toboni helped build in Boston, Washington still feels thin.

At 35 years old, Tobani becomes just the third person to lead the Washington Nationals since the team moved from Montreal in 2005. His age alone makes this a fascinating thing. Yet, one cannot deny that he is one of the smartest people in the game. The Nationals are hoping on Tobani’s ability to fix the player development system that has lagged for years. His Boston resume of draft hits, the development wins, and survival through the regime changes all show that he has an eye for talent and can adapt to change and rebuild.

For sure, this is not a sure thing. But in Paul Tobani, the Nationals see a chance to reset the franchise with a fresh voice. This could be the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise.
