Mizzou, Edward Jones develop financial education program for student-athletes

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Mizzou Athletics has teamed up with Edward Jones to offer a new financial resource to benefit its student-athletes.
On Wednesday, MU announced that it is launching a financial education program for student-athletes, which is aimed to empower them during the revenue-sharing and Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) era of college sports.
“It’s really important,” Mizzou Athletics Director Laird Veatch said at a press conference. “There’s been a lot of efforts already going on, but with this relationship with Edward Jones and this tailor-made program for them, it just takes it to another level. We’re really proud of it because it’s such a powerful in-state brand and coming alongside them in this way can really impact our student-athletes.”
The program will offer monthly workshops that will cover a wide-range of topics that were chosen by the student-athletes, including healthy financial habits, budgeting, how to talk about money, tax basics, investing basics and more. Once educational prerequisites are met, student-athletes will gain access to meet one-on-one with a financial coach, who will focus on their individual needs.
Through Mizzou’s partnership with Edward Jones and Goalsetter, student-athletes will also be offered a mobile-friendly financial literacy app, which is tailored to strengthening their positive financial habits.
“With college athletics always changing in this changing landscape, this support is super important for our student-athletes. This financial education and planning means so much to us,” Addie Dobson, a member of Mizzou Women’s Golf, said. “This time of my life is super important to plan for the future or plan ahead as I’m transitioning to a future professional role, knowing how to manage my money, helping my friends manage their money is super important to my development as a future adult and transitioning out of college sports.”
Mizzou Athletics serves 450 student-athletes across 20 different sports.
