Downton Abbey iconic bell wall used to summon servants sells for £216k at auction

The bell wall, which had an estimate of £5,000 – £7,000, was an integral part of the Downton Abbey world, featuring from the first season until the last.

An auction of props, costumes, and set pieces from the popular TV show completed, with all 267 lots sold at a whopping total of £1,735,744.

Bonhams Auctions described the bell wall as: “Overlooking the servants’ dining hall, it represented the in-between space between ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ and acts as a springboard for much of the action in the series.”

Other highlights included Lady Mary’s (Michelle Dockery) wedding dress and bouquet, which sold for £21,760, and an autographed script of season one, which went for £24,320.

Charlie Thomas, Bonhams UK Group Director for House Sales and Private & Iconic Collections, commented: “It has been an absolute pleasure working with Carnival Films on Downton Abbey: The Auction.

“Over the past month, we’ve welcomed visitors from around the world to New Bond Street to view the exhibition and take part in the sale.

“With every lot sold and final prices far surpassing expectations, the auction stands as a true testament to the enduring appeal of Downton Abbey.”

Harvey Cammell, Global Director, Valuations & Private Collections, added: “This was a phenomenal auction, and the incredible response from fans, with participants from across 44 countries, shows the clear appetite for auctions of this nature and, with a likewise amazing result for The Crown Auction last year, Bonhams is the go-to auction house for popular culture memorabilia.”

Show producers Carnival Films will contribute their proceeds from items in the sale to Together for Short Lives, the UK’s leading charity for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
