Ben Affleck’s daughter spoke about older generations needing to protect young people’s accessibility to clean air during a pro-mask rant before the United Nations -but failed to mention her father’s nasty smoking habit.
Violet Affleck, 19, appeared Tuesday on a panel for a UN event concerning healthy indoor air to rally for mask mandates and for cleaner air for younger and future generations.
During her four-minute speech, she called smoking a ‘generational memory,’ as the habit has significantly decreased over the decades. She said this was due to older generations fighting to ban indoor smoking.
The Ivy League student said she was confused by ‘no smoking’ signs on planes as a child, wondering: ‘Who would do that? That’s gross!’
But now, the teen believes we ‘can and must do that again’ with clean air and mask mandates.
‘We can recognize filtered air as a human right as filtered water,’ she said at the event. ‘It is neglect of the highest order to look children in the eyes and say: “We knew how to protect you and we didn’t do it.”
Violent, who is the daughter of Affleck and actress Jennifer Garner, did not bring up her father, who has frequently been pictured smoking.
The actor’s habit has become a meme, with people using a photo of Affleck looking distressed while puffing on a cigarette to convey their own emotions.
Violet’s main concern at the event was to advocate for bringing back mask mandates to stop the spread and reinfection of Covid in children to avoid its long-term effects.
‘We can create clean air infrastructures that is so ubiquitous and so obviously necessary that tomorrow’s children don’t even know why we need it,’ she said.
‘For adults, the relentless beat of “back to normal,” ignoring, downplaying, and concealing both the prevalence of airborne transmission and the threat of long Covid manifested in a series of choices.’
The ‘youth advocate’ went on to say that institutions have failed the American people after the pandemic and were unsuccessful in their promises to ‘do everything we could to protect our communities going forward.’
‘We need the people who remember 2020, who were, not like me, 14 in 2020, to be loud about the world that we were promised at the onset of the pandemic,’ she said.
The teenager made headlines last year when she demanded mask mandates in medical facilities, citing her experience of contracting ‘a post-viral condition’ in 2019.
In paparazzi photos, the eldest daughter of the Hollywood stars has often been pictured wearing a mask at events with her family – even if she has been the only one to do so.
Delivering her impassioned speech at the UN, Violet added that ‘our present is being stolen right in front of our eyes.’
She said that young people have ‘lacked both real choice in the matter and information about what was being chosen for us.’
In May, Violet authored an article published in Yale Global Health Review that focused on Los Angeles’ organized response to Covid, as well as climate change.
Violet said eliminating the virus fully involves wearing masks, employers providing paid sick leave and universal health care to workers, and taking environmental measures to keep air clean.
She also urged people to stay organized and distribute masks free of charge to people in need of them.
‘In the same way that COVID-conscious and disabled people celebrate each chain of transmission broken,’ Violet wrote in the piece, ‘climate scientists recognize that each degree of warming we avoid will be a victory.
‘It’s time for everyone who cares about the latter to engage with the people, the methods, and the political commitments that make the former possible.’
Violet last year spoke in front of the LA County Board of Supervisors in an effort ‘to confront the long COVID crisis’ with demands for how to restructure things.
‘I demand mask availability, air filtration and Far-UVC light in government facilitates, including jails and detention centers, and mask mandates in county medical faculties,’ she told the board.
In the July 2024 meeting, Violet said that laws to suppress mandatory mask wearing cause ‘vulnerable members of our community’ to be ‘less safe’ and make ‘everyone less able to participate in Los Angeles together.’
‘It stands to exacerbate our homelessness crisis, as well as the suffering of many people in our city,’ she added. ‘It hits communities of color, disabled people, elderly people, trans people, women and anyone in a public facing essential job the hardest.’
Violet also called on public officials to invest resources in Personal Protective Equipment ahead of a potential future pandemic.
‘You must expand the availability of high-quality free tests and treatment, and most importantly the county must oppose mask bans for any reason,’ Violet said. ‘They do not keep us safer.
