Actress Sydney Sweeney has undergone a dramatic transformation to portray legendary boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic Christy. Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last week, the makers released the official trailer on Thursday, September 11. Directed by David Michod, the film will showcase the highs and lows that Christy, who was nicknamed The Coal Miner’s Daughter, faced during her career.
The trailer begins with the introduction of Sydney Sweeney as Christy, who is seen with dark, curly hair and a muscular build. She gets ready to meet with prolific boxing promoter Don King for the first time. She grew up in West Virginia and began to make a name for herself for her fighting prowess in the 1980s. With the support of her trainer and manager, Jim Martin, who eventually becomes her husband, played by Ben Foster, she quickly gained international recognition. She became the first female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated and was even inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame.
Christy’s Trailer Shows The Boxer’s Toxic Relationship With Her Husband
In the trailer, Sydney says, “I think I’ve found my thing. I know most people go their entire lives, and they don’t even know what their thing is.” However, soon the story also reveals the darker side of her personal life. As her relationship with Jim turns toxic, he even threatens her, “If you leave me, I’ll kill you.” Sydney fights back, saying, “Do what you have to do.”
A part of the official synopsis read: “While Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it—confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.”
Alongside Sydney and Ben, Christy features Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad Coleman, Bryan Hibbard, Tony Cavalero and Gilbert Cruz. The film, based on the real-life story of the boxer, is scheduled for release in theatres on November 7 by Black Bear Pictures.
How Much Weight Did Sydney Sweeney Gain For Her Role In Christy?
While speaking about her challenging role as Christy Martin in the upcoming sports biopic, Sydney Sweeney revealed that she trained with a boxing coach for several months. She stuck to a strict regimen and gained 30 pounds for the role. “I absolutely loved it. I truly felt Christy’s power as I transformed. And I really enjoyed being able to train and work with incredible boxing coaches and weight trainers, and nutritionists that helped me get to the place that I was for Christy,” she shared while speaking with Deadline.
