Kaieteur Sports – After months of preparation, the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) has officially rolled out its Advanced Governance and Leadership Programme, a landmark initiative designed to elevate the standard of sports administration across the region.

The programme is being delivered under CANOC’s Strategic Plan and forms part of its ongoing commitment to providing continuing education for its members.

It follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of the West Indies (UWI) Sports Faculty at CANOC’s 21st General Assembly in Barbados on October 8, 2023.

In addition, the initiative benefits from a 2024 MOU between CANOC and the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP), further strengthening its international collaboration.

The development of this programme was heavily influenced by CANOC’s third Needs Assessment Survey, which identified education and leadership training as a top priority for current and future sports leaders across its membership.

“This programme is a direct response to what our members told us they needed most—education and training to strengthen governance in sport,” CANOC said in a statement.

The initiative is tailored for executives of member organisations, chairs of commissions and committees, as well as administrators from national sports associations and other sporting bodies endorsed by CANOC members.

By targeting decision-makers at the highest levels, CANOC aims to create a ripple effect that will improve governance, professionalism, and efficiency throughout the Caribbean sporting landscape.

The Advanced Governance and Leadership Programme will focus on, building a deeper understanding of CANOC’s core principles and strategic direction and highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement, forecasting, and planning.

Training participants in effective strategic and operational planning, along with implementing governance structures essential to the success of sporting bodies and exploring business model adoption for sustainable organisational growth.

Strengthening awareness of roles, responsibilities, and organisational culture and enhancing knowledge of the Olympic Movement and navigating funding opportunities will also be on the programme.

CANOC, according to release, believes that the successful completion of the programme will encourage its members to adopt a more professional approach to sports governance and management, ultimately contributing to sustainable development in the region’s sporting sector.

The launch of this programme marks a significant step forward in CANOC’s long-term vision of strengthening leadership and governance across Caribbean sport, ensuring the region is better prepared to meet global standards while creating a legacy of growth and professionalism.
