School in Kubalia engages in futsal

A NEW school in East Sepik is using futsal to develop the students in school with the aim to create a pathway for future stars.

Haniak Primary School in Kubalia, Yangoru-Saussia, has more than 200 students, who are doing kindergarten and primary education, and offering flexible, open and distance education (FODE) studies to Grades 7-12.

Headmaster Clarence Hukahu said that all students enrolled in the school are part of the Futsal Development Program and may soon participate in the Haniak Futsal Association competition.

“The Haniak Futsal Association is one of 10 futsal associations set up by the Sepik Futsal Association (SFA),” Hukahu said.

“Haniak school is the second school where the SFA and the Sepik Football Club have supported.

Jambitanget High School in North Wosera in Wosera-Gawi district and Haniak Primary School were created with the aim of developing them into Futsal or sports academies.”

As the SFA president, Hukahu said futsal and volleyball are promoted by Haniak, because Sepiks are used to playing soccer and volleyball.

He said it is a long-tern goal by the SFA and the Sepik Football Club to have Futsal or sports academies in all districts in the province.

He said futsal helps to provide skills development.

“Futsal apart from soccer has a pathway leading to its World Cup,and PNG has the potential l to get there. Futsal in East Sepik has developed a lot of players who are currently dominating the current Sepik provincial teams.”

He said the way forward is to have Futsal and sports-minded teachers and staff who will groom football players in all six districts of East Sepik.
