NTPC arm looks to global bidding for nuclear-power expansion

NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Ltd, a subsidiary of India’s largest power generator NTPC Ltd, is looking to build atomic energy projects primarily through international competitive bidding to reach its goal of 30 GW capacity by 2047, which is around a third of India’s total target, Prasenjit Pal, executive director-nuclear at NTPC Ltd, told ET.The technology in focus for NTPC’s own nuclear plans would be pressurised water reactors (PWRs), which is the most commonly available global technology, said Pal, who is also the chief executive of NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Ltd.The company had invited expressions of interest from global companies for cooperation in indigenising PWR technology and to establish large-capacity nuclear power plants with a target capacity of around 15 GW.Among the responders, at least four major global players have shown interest in coming to India as evident from the response to the company’s expression of interest, Pal said. “Among the interested parties, all four major companies have indicated their interest informally,” he addedCompanies, including ROSATOM of Russia, Korea Electric Power Corporation of South Korea, Westinghouse of US and EDF of France have shown interest in participating in India’s nuclear energy sector, he said.Live Events”In case we move for a global tender for indigenisation of technologies and establish large-capacity units, the expectation is that four entities will participate in it,” he said. NTPC has been scouting for land and water at more than 30 locations across the country. Some states have given permission for the same and site-specific studies have started, he said.Mahi-Banswara n- plantPM Narendra Modi will on Thursday lay the foundation stone of the 4X700 MW Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project, which is a first-of-its-kind joint project being developed by NTPC and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd through their joint venture Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI). The project is a part of fleet mode implementation of pressurised heavy water reactor nuclear power projects in the country that involves 10 reactors of similar design, Pal said.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
