Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong on Tuesday stressed the importance of opposing tariffs, trade wars, and power politics, while calling for strengthened economic and diplomatic ties between China and India. “It is all the more important that we carry forward the great spirit forged during the War of Resistance, firmly oppose hegemony, power politics, and any form of tariff and trade wars, jointly defend the common interests of the Global South, and build a community with a shared future for humanity,” Xu said while addressing a public engagement in New Delhi. The Chinese diplomat also noted the growing economic and trade relationship between the two countries, noting that cooperation continues to expand and holds “great potential.” “China stands ready to work with India to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields and make a bigger pie of common interests. We are ready to advance friendly exchanges with India at all levels and in all sectors, and further deepen mutual understanding and friendship,” he added. The remarks come against the backdrop of tensions in global trade, especially under the United States’ steep “reciprocal tariff” policies under President Donald Trump.Live EventsThe US has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports, with a 25% “reciprocal tariff” and an additional 25% penalty allegedly due to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The Trump administration has claimed that Beijing and New Delhi are indirectly the primary funders of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war as the two countries are the largest buyers of Russian crude oil that, according to the White House, are funding the European conflict. “China and India are the main funders of the war by continuing to buy Russian oil,” President Trump said yet again on Tuesday said while addressing the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.India has repeatedly refuted the claim and termed the US penalty as unfair and unjust.Meanwhile, PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently held wide-ranging talks in Tianjin, during the prime minister’s first visit to China in seven years. The leaders discussed border stability, cross-border terrorism, trade, and global governance, agreeing to expand economic ties, reduce trade imbalances, and uphold multilateralism. Both leaders have reaffirmed cooperation on regional connectivity projects and global economic stability, signalling a steady rebuilding of bilateral ties since their Kazan meeting last year.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
