The Post and Courier is more than just a news outlet. It is a family-owned business operated by people who live in the communities they cover.
As The Post and Courier Columbia continues to bring you dogged coverage across the Midlands, we want to profile the staff who write the stories our readers rely on. Today, we speak with Ian Grenier, a South Carolina native who spearheads Columbia’s education coverage.
What Columbia tradition do you never miss?
I love going to Gamecock football games in the fall. I grew up a fan and went to USC, so it’s great to still be in town for the season.
If you weren’t a journalist, what would you be doing?
I’d probably take a shot at going to law school, but I also find history to be very interesting, so I think it would be fun to do something related to research or teaching.
What’s the value of local education reporting?
As someone who attended public schools in South Carolina from kindergarten to college, I think it’s important for the public to know how our kids and families are (or aren’t) getting what they need from their schools. It’s also important to have someone in the room keeping track of the decisions being made with our tax money.
