US President Donald Trump may visit India later this year for the QUAD Leaders Summit. His close aide Sergio Gor said that Trump is “fully committed” to meeting QUAD leaders and that talks are already happening about his trip. Gor who has been chosen as the next US ambassador to India told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that he could not give exact dates yet. He said the QUAD is very important for the US.
When asked whether he would ensure a scheduled Quad summit takes place later this year he said Without committing to exact dates the president is fully committed to continue to meet with the Quad and strengthening it. Earlier The New York Times had reported that Trump had cancelled plans to come to India for the November QUAD Summit.
Back in June Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited Trump during a phone call on June 17. According to India’s statement after the call Trump had accepted the invite. Gor’s recent comments now suggest the visit is still being planned.
The two leaders are also expected to speak again soon to finalize the schedule for the summit. Just last month Trump appointed Sergio Gor who was serving as the director of presidential personnel as the new US ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asia.
US-India not that far apart on tariffs?
Sergio Gor has said that the US and India are close to settling their differences on tariffs and a deal could be reached in the coming weeks. He admitted there have been disagreements over trade and India’s oil imports from Russia. But he stressed that ties between the two countries remain strong and strategically important.
Speaking at his Senate confirmation hearing to become the next US ambassador to India Gor told lawmakers “We’re not that far from an agreement on tariffs and I believe it will be resolved soon.” He also pointed out that the US and India share long-term goals and enjoy a “much warmer relationship than either country has with China.”
Relation between Modi and Trump
Sergio Gor said that President Trump shares a “special friendship” with Prime Minister Modi calling their bond unique. He noted that while Trump has sometimes criticized India he has always praised Modi personally. “They have an incredible relationship…I’ve seen it myself when they were in the same room” Gor said adding that both sides are already close to reaching a deal on tariffs.
According to Gor trade talks are now in the “detailed” stage. He stressed that India is more than just a regional ally and is a true “strategic partner” for the US.
If confirmed as ambassador Gor said his priorities would be to rebuild trust fix trade issues and strengthen cooperation in areas like climate defence and technology. He also promised to deepen ties in security trade and shared values.
US tariff on India
The Trump administration has slapped steep new tariffs on Indian goods imposing a 25 per cent reciprocal duty along with another 25 per cent penalty linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil. This raises the total tariff burden to 50 per cent one of the highest in the world.
President Trump has accused India of helping “fuel Russia’s deadly attacks on Ukraine” by buying cheap Russian crude. However he has so far avoided taking stronger steps such as direct sanctions against Moscow.
