Autumn is beginning to make its presence felt across Scotland, with trees shedding their leaves and the weather turning wetter and windier. To mark the season, the Daily Record has selected the Loch Lomond & Cowal Way in Argyll as its latest Walk of the Week.
Known as “Scotland in 57 miles”, the route is less than an hour from Glasgow city centre and Glasgow International Airport, offering walkers, runners, and mountain bikers a showcase of the Highlands’ most striking scenery.
Established in 2000, the 57-mile trail runs the length of the Cowal Peninsula, passing through the villages of Portavadie, Tighnabruaich, Glendaruel, Strachur, Lochgoilhead, and Arrochar before reaching Inveruglas on Loch Lomond.
The route combines existing footpaths, forestry tracks, quiet roads, hillsides, and traditional rights of way, providing varied landscapes including shorelines, forests, hills, and lochs.
Highlights include the Kyles of Bute, tranquil glens in Glendaruel, secluded forest walks, panoramic views over the Clyde coast, and the dramatic heights of the Arrochar Alps. In season, walkers may even cross Loch Lomond by water bus at the trail’s terminus.
Now recognised as one of Scotland’s Great Trails, the Loch Lomond & Cowal Way connects with the famous West Highland Way and reflects the diversity of the Highlands, with 50 percent of the route lying within Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.
Its combination of natural beauty, heritage, and welcoming communities makes it one of the UK’s top long-distance routes.
