The controversy around the film
Vivek Agnihotri’s latest film The Bengal Files opened in cinemas across India on September 5, 2025. However, the film has not been released in West Bengal, as theatre owners in the state have declined to screen it.
Ahead of the release, producer and actress Pallavi Joshi addressed an open letter to President Droupadi Murmu, raising concerns over the issue. More recently, the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) also stepped in, writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding what it described as an “unofficial ban” of the film in West Bengal. The body urged the Prime Minister to intervene.
Despite the absence of screenings in West Bengal, the film has managed to draw audiences elsewhere. According to data from Sacnilk, The Bengal Files collected Rs 7.90 crore in its first four days. On Tuesday, the film was estimated to add another Rs 1.30 crore, bringing its five-day total to around Rs 9.20 crore.
All about The Bengal Files
The Bengal Files is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language political drama written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri. The film centers on the events of Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots, presenting the violence and its aftermath as a genocide and claiming that these chapters of history were deliberately overlooked.
The film is the third and final installment of Agnihotri’s The Files Trilogy, which explores modern Indian history, following The Tashkent Files (2019) and The Kashmir Files (2022). With a runtime of 204 minutes, it is among the longest Indian films and was released theatrically on 5 September 2025. Upon release, it received negative reviews from critics, who also criticised the film for its alleged distortion of historical events.
The Bengal Files depicts the tragic events of Direct Action Day on 16 August 1946, also known as the Great Calcutta Killings. The violence quickly spread to other parts of the Bengal Presidency, including the Noakhali riots and incidents in Tipperah and Comilla. Through a cinematic narrative, the film portrays how these events shaped India’s path toward independence and partition.
