STILLWATER – While Chad Weiberg apparently will oversee Oklahoma State’s search for a new head football coach, there still is no absolutely clarity on his contract status as the university’s athletic director.
As his original four-year deal expired on June 30, the first question presented to Weiberg during a Tuesday news conference was, “Did you get a new contract?”
“We’re not here to talk about my deal,” Weiberg replied.
When asked for a simple “yes” or a “no” on the contract question, he said, “No. (A new contract) is not something that is completed, and it’s not something that I’m worried about at this time.
“I feel very good about where I’m at and my relationship with (OSU President Jim Hess), and his leadership of this university. I feel great about our (Board of Regents) and the support from the board. I’m not worried about (the contract).”
The firing of Cowboy football coach Mike Gundy was the reason for Tuesday’s media event at Gallagher-Iba Arena. About four hours before it began, Gundy visited Weiberg’s office and learned that he is finished after only three games of his 21st season as the head coach.
There were indications that Weiberg actually had been given a new deal – a four-year contract worth $900,000 annually – but neither he nor any university official would provide confirmation.
As OSU’s athletic director since July 1, 2021, Weiberg currently makes $750,000. On Aug. 2, he underwent a six-hour open-heart surgery.
“I’m doing good,” Weiberg reported on Tuesday. “I feel good. I feel blessed. I (hope) people don’t ask me to throw hay bales around any time soon. Other than that, I’m good.”
